Who We Are

Historical Development of The Firm

Mashabela Attorneys Incorporated is a wholly black owned law firm established in 2011, The company has been in operation since its establishment in January 2011. It started as sole trader  and later in 2015 registered with CIPC as the incorporated firm.

Mashabela Attorneys has an office in Polokwane, Mbombela (Nelspruit)  and Pretoria and the short term goal has been to provide legal services to legal services consumers in the Limpopo Province, while the long term goal is to expand its services to all the provinces in South Africa which goal is being realised.

Whilst the firm still plays a significant role in access to justice in the narrow sense of criminal justice, it has turned its focus to the empowering of our population by moving into corporate and commercial practice to serve both private sector and government structures. This helps to empower our previously disadvantaged community to participate meaningfully in poverty eradication.

LIMPOPO OFFICE (HQ)

Mashabela Attorneys Inc offices are located at 24 Grobler Street, Polokwane, Opposite palm Centre. This is a strategic location for providing services to our clients as the offices are adjacent (five minutes walking distance) to the Magistrate’s and High Courts and the SAPS and approximately three minutes’ drive to the CCMA and the Master of the High Court.

PRETORIA OFFICE (BRANCH)

Our Pretoria office is situated at the CBD and it`s a stone’s throw from the Magistrates and High Courts, Master of the High Court, Deeds Office etc. We are adjacent to all the major necessary areas needed to provide you with our legal service speedily.

Realising the diversity of legal work and the individual needs of each client, our firm does not subscribe to a generic approach in servicing clients, both in terms of work and fees. Suitable arrangements are made from time to time, in consultation with clients, regarding the service to be rendered, line of communication, mandate turnaround time, time and manner of consultations, and fee structure in such a way that the arrangement is convenient to both sides.

Having discussed the mandate and the needs of the clients, constant contact is maintained to keep them informed both in terms of financial liability, the progress of mandate, encountered and expected challenges as well as expected time to complete the mandate, to avoid or curb possible negative impact.

Strict professionalism in the carrying out of the mandate given is maintained, confidentiality being the cornerstone of trust between our firm and the client.

We appreciate the fact that in the course of consultation, clients may have to divulge some sensitive, confidential and the information that may be of strategic nature and adhere to the ethics of confidentiality.

To this end and in some cases, client may require that confidentiality be part of the written mandate and we respect that .This is the spirit to encourage our clients to be as open as possible and enable us to professionally and speedily serve their interests, facilitate their access to justice.

We appreciate the growing rate of unemployment, and commit ourselves, whenever possible, and through our limited resources and infrastructure, to empower communities by creating employment opportunities through permanent, temporary, and contractual employment. We therefore keep a database of the unemployed, particularly law graduates, from which to draw in case of need. In this way, we are in a position to empower our people to attain knowledge, to which they can refer and use in future.

Apart from being a law firm, we appreciate the need to interact and participate in community projects/activities. In case of mandates involving projects, every effort is made to engage members from the concerned communities. On an ad hoc basis, we donate to NPOs in rural areas in Mafefe Village.

As the Company grows, we contemplate to offer bursaries to previously disadvantaged individuals especially youth in our profession first and moving to other professions as our resources allow. At the moment as part of our commitment to improving the lives of especially young legal practitioners, in conjunction with Black Lawyers Association, we have a yearly intake of law students with the aim of mentoring them albeit for a short period during their quarterly recess.

Mr Mashabela has been making a contribution in a form of advising listenership of Thobela FM since 2011 to date on the programme (Molao O reng?) on a pro bono basis.

The Firm has committed itself to providing pro bono services to our communities either through telephonic or office personal consultations. Free legal advice has become our norm at Mashabela Attorneys Inc.

Mashabela Attorneys Inc has a working relationship with Pro Bono.Org wherein the Firm takes on an a hoc basis, matters that are actionable especially involving human rights violations.

The firm being wholly black owned, it understands and commits itself to contributing to the stated government policies of making conditions conducive for equal participating opportunities, especially for the previously disadvantaged sectors of our community.

With a view to narrowing the prevailing gab of white male dominated participation in our economy, the firm has taken a principled position to engage women in our establishment, fully appreciating that white women were also disadvantaged, thus keeping an open door policy in  that regard.

At present, as part of women empowerment and gender equity, out of twelve staff compliment, Seven (7) are women.
